About Us
We are sisters who have grown up surrounded by art. Our mother has always been an artist and, as a single mom, would make extra money selling paintings when we were little. She didn’t discover sculpting, however, until many years later when her own mother required full-time care and she suddenly had to find a way to work at home.
First, she thought of making and selling beautifully-decorated eggs with hinged doors and cute faerie scenes inside. She listed her first egg on eBay and it was a hit! But detailed miniature fairies were hard to find so she tried making her own with polymer clay. She didn’t consider herself a sculptor yet, so she was surprised when many people contacted her to find out if they could buy her tiny faeries!
That is how Faeries in the Attic (FITA) began. Her first figures were just a few inches tall and she auctioned off three or four each week. In between making them, she studied human anatomy with the goal of moving on from cute little figures to larger, more serious sculptures. She started sculpting faeries, then mermaids, selkies, centaurs, and all kinds of fantasy creatures. Her following grew and grew, and eventually she only needed to sell one a week as her pieces now fetched better prices.
She cared for her mother for over 11 years and continued to sell sculptures for almost 20 years. And although she was happy to sell hundreds of pieces to wonderful collectors all over the world, we were always sad to see her one-of-a-kind creations be packed up and shipped off. She looked into making reproductions, but it was a complicated and involved process back then.
Then, more recently, we learned about the advancements of resin 3D printing! We realized we could make our own reproductions of her creations and offer them at much lower prices than her eBay one-of-a-kind pieces (which often sold for thousands). And, of course, our mom was thrilled with the idea of revisiting some her favorite themes, like faeries on mushrooms or flowers. So with our own kids grown now and more free time, my sister and I decided to open an Etsy shop and do something we are all passionate about—creating fantasy pieces!
Each 3D-printed sculpture begins with an original piece that has been sculpted in-house and turned into a digital file. Since our fantasy figures are not printed from purchased files and we don’t sell the files we generate, our pieces can only be found here. We are employing many of the techniques our mom used on her sculptures, such as painting, dressing, and making wings. And since so much of the detail work can only be done by hand, each piece will have its own unique characteristics and an individual serial number.
But even with the advantage of 3D printing technology, many hours go into making a finished piece (for more details about our process, click here). There will be spans in between each new series which cannot be rushed, so if you’d like to be notified when we do list new pieces, please send us a message or sign up for our mailing list at the bottom of the page.
We are always getting new ideas and are very excited to be able to offer these magical creations to other lovers of the fantasy realm!
